Even though the temperatures haven’t dropped just yet, now is the perfect time to start thinking about your HVAC system. If you're a homeowner in Iowa County or Grant County, a little early maintenance goes a long way toward avoiding surprises when the cold finally sets in.
Here’s your essential fall HVAC maintenance checklist to help you get ahead — and stay comfortable all season long.
1. Change Your Furnace Filter
This is one of the easiest and most important things you can do. A dirty filter restricts airflow, making your system work harder and raising your energy bill. We recommend replacing your filter every 1–3 months, and fall is a must-change moment before your furnace kicks into high gear.
2. Test Your Thermostat
Before you really need your heat, set your thermostat to heating mode and test your system. If there’s a delay or no heat, it’s better to find out now than during a cold snap. Pro tip: A programmable or smart thermostat can help save on your heating costs all winter long.
3. Clear Debris from Your Outdoor AC Unit
Even though your AC won’t be used until next year, it’s important to take care of it now. Leaves, sticks, and dirt can build up around the unit and cause corrosion or airflow issues later. Here’s what to do:
Clear vegetation at least 2 feet around the unit
Gently rinse it off with a garden hose
Consider covering the top of the unit with a breathable cover (don’t use plastic)
4. Schedule a Professional Furnace Tune-Up
Having your furnace inspected by a professional ensures it’s safe, efficient, and ready to keep your home warm all winter. At Midwest Heating & Air, we’ll inspect all major components, clean the burners, check gas connections, and verify everything is running smoothly. A tune-up now can prevent major issues — and keep your utility bills in check.
5. Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Carbon monoxide is odorless and dangerous. Fall is the time to test your detectors and replace batteries. If you don’t have one near your furnace or in your sleeping areas, get one — it’s a simple, affordable step that can save lives.
6. Inspect Ductwork and Vents
Walk through your home and:
Make sure vents are not blocked by furniture or rugs
Look for signs of dust buildup or cold drafts
Listen for whistling or rattling sounds from duct leaks
Leaky ducts can waste heat and reduce comfort throughout your home.
7. Replace Your Humidifier’s Water Panel
If you have a whole-home humidifier attached to your furnace, fall is the time to replace the humidifier water panel (also called a humidifier pad). These need to be changed annually to maintain proper humidity levels and keep your system running efficiently. Old or clogged pads can lead to mold, mineral buildup, reduced indoor air quality, and even flooding in your basement.
